Pt3 hēmikrania: restart

The final image in my series is about the relief and happiness I feel when the migraine starts to go. It’s like I’m coming out of the darkness and everything feels shiny and bright around me. Like I’ve had a reboot. But it all feels a little odd, a bit topsy turvy for a while, like I need time to readjust back into the world.

Pt1 hēmikrania: the enchantment

I’m lucky that I don’t get migraines frequently so when one strikes it leaves me feeling underprepared, in particular in managing the expectations of those around me as to what I’m able to do on those days.

The week I had set aside to create a new series of work, a migraine decided to ruin my plans. And even when it had passed I kept thinking back on how it had felt and how it had so quickly changed my week. So when I got back to my camera, I realised that I wanted the series to reflect my experience of migraines. No two migraines for me are the same and everyone’s experience of them is different, but I wanted to focus on 3 aspects of having a migraine attack that really resonate with me.

This first image is the aura, or “flashing lights” as I call them. They’re brightly coloured lights that flash and spin, mostly in the periphery of my vision. I don’t always get them but I find them mesmorising, they make everything so much more colourful and fun. I find myself stopping to focus on them and admire their shimmer. But then I remember that they’re a warning, they’re telling me that a migraine is about to arrive, and so I try and see through them in the hope that they will pass quickly.

In the pursuit of creating something meaningful, you can get caught up in the detail, and sometimes you’ve just got to have fun. It’s the school holidays, it’s lockdown, we’ve got a lot of paint out, so I gave the children the brushes and said go for it. Pure escapism. Pure chaos. Pure laughter. I am my children’s artwork.

“Ownership”

I wanted to explore the loss of identity I felt came with motherhood. How the “me” I thought I was changed overnight into “someone’s Mum.” And over the years as my children have grown, the real me has been obsured more and more. My children inadvertantly define how I am portrayed to others, they control how I am seen and hide who I think I am. They have power over my identity. They own me.

I knew I wanted to create an image where my children were obscuring my face, whilst at the same time not being recognisable themselves. I chose purple because it is symbolic with power and paint because it’s easy, effective and fun! It was great to get the kids involved and they loved the mess of covering me in paint.

Thank you to @brookeshaden for all the incredible enthusiasm she has put into her creativity challenge project, it’s been a great week connecting with the community and enjoying the outstanding work that they’ve produced
